How to Choose a Phang Nga Bay & James Bond Island Tour — Island-Hopping Speedboat or Canoe, Sunset & Night Sea

James Bond Island (Khao Tapu) with sea canoes, Phang Nga Bay

Phang Nga Bay is a sea of limestone islands, and it’s home to James Bond Island from the 007 film The Man with the Golden Gun. Tours here come in two kinds: full-day speedboat tours that visit several islands, and late-morning or midday departures that add cave canoeing, a sunset dinner on board and glowing plankton after dark. This guide narrows down the five Phang Nga Bay tours TripRAON sells with a few questions. Our team has taken every tour we sell.

At a glance

  • Day tours (Sea Star): morning or late-morning start, back before dinner. Land on James Bond Island · lunch at a floating village · canoeing at Hong Island · end at Khai Island (snorkelling) or a Yao Island beach club
  • Into-the-night tours (John Gray · Sail Tours): pickup 10:30 (John Gray) · 12:00 (Sail Tours), back around 20:30. Cave canoeing · sunset dinner on board · plankton
  • To land on James Bond Island: the two Sea Star tours · Sail Tours / seen from the boat: John Gray
  • Guides paddle the canoes for you — no experience needed.
  • Just your group: John Gray Private Charter

Question 2. Do you want to land on James Bond Island?

James Bond Island is the nail-shaped rock standing in the sea (Khao Tapu). The island right next to it, where you stand to see it and take photos, is Khao Phing Kan.

Question 3. What’s the cave canoeing like?

All five tours include canoeing, and your guide paddles for you. You just sit back and look up at the rock ceilings and hidden lagoons.

  • Sea Star: both tours stop at Panak Island and canoe through the mangroves at Hong Island · James Bond + Khai also explores a mangrove cave or the Ice Cream Cave depending on the tide (helmet and lamp provided)
  • Sail Tours: caves and a hidden lagoon on Panak Island (wild monkeys) · Hong Island lagoon · plankton in the Panak caves after sunset
  • John Gray: mangrove-cave canoeing at Panak and Hong islands · make and float a krathong (lotus float) · plankton
  • Cave passages can be blocked by the tide, so the order and timing may change on the day.

Question 4. Who are you travelling with?

  • With kids: the Sea Star Yao Island tour ends at a beach club with a floating water park. Sail Tours’ boat has 2 toilets and a kitchen, and if you bring a stroller your child can rest or sleep on board. Child-rate ages differ (Sail Tours 4–14 · John Gray shared 7–12 · younger children free), so check each tour page.
  • Small and quiet: Sail Tours takes a maximum of 20 guests (usually 10–15) on a boat built for more than 40.
  • Just your family or group: John Gray Private Charter has no other guests (up to 38 people), and the price is per boat, so the bigger your group, the lower the cost per person. Good for a proposal or an anniversary, too.
  • If snorkelling matters: the water inside Phang Nga Bay is murky, so visibility can be poor. For clear-water snorkelling, pick Sea Star James Bond + Khai Island, which ends at Khai Island.

TripRAON’s take

  • Want James Bond Island, the floating village, canoeing and a beach in one day? Sea Star James Bond + Khai Island. Worried about seasickness? Choose the speed catamaran.
  • Not a morning person, and want water play for the kids? Lazy James Bond + Yao Island (Sun · Tue · Thu).
  • Want to land on James Bond Island by canoe and enjoy the bay quietly into the night? Sail Tours.
  • Want to float a lotus lantern on the night sea? John Gray. Just know that plankton and the krathong can be cancelled or hard to see depending on weather, moonlight and tides.

Good to know before you go

  • Free cancellation deadlines: Sea Star = until 16:30 (Thai time) the day before · Sail Tours and John Gray = up to 2 days before. John Gray date changes are free until 18:00 the day before departure.
  • Sea Star may cancel if fewer than 10 people book (full refund). Pregnant women, babies under 1 and anyone who has had bone surgery in the last 6 months can’t board, and it’s not recommended for people over 70 or with asthma, heart disease or high blood pressure.
  • John Gray shared tour: travel insurance doesn’t cover infants, people aged 70 or over, or anyone with an existing medical condition — please check the tour page.
  • Food: all Sail Tours meals are halal; if you need vegetarian food, add it to your booking notes. On John Gray, drinks (including beer) are bought on site.
  • What to bring: swimsuit · towel (rent at the pier with Sea Star · beach towel rental with John Gray) · hat · sunscreen · some cash. You may get wet in the canoe, so keep your phone in a waterproof pouch — John Gray gives you a dry bag.
  • What’s included: all five tours include round-trip hotel pickup (extra charge in some areas with Sea Star), the national park fee, canoeing, meals and insurance.

FAQ

Can I land on James Bond Island?
Yes. Sea Star tours stop and let you land on Khao Phing Kan, and Sail Tours land by sea canoe. John Gray tours see it from the boat.

Do I have to paddle the canoe?
No. On all five tours, a guide paddles for you.

Will I definitely see the plankton?
No. Depending on the weather, moonlight and tides, it may be faint or not visible. Plankton is seen after dark, so it’s only part of the Sail Tours and John Gray tours.
